partitions.si

A partition divides a whole into separate, non-overlapping parts, each managed on its own. It is how disks are organized, how databases and data streams scale, and how large systems keep one failure from becoming every failure.

Why "partitions"

Almost everything at scale is partitioned. Disks are divided into partitions so a single device can hold separate, isolated volumes. Databases partition tables by key or range so a query touches only the data it needs. Streaming platforms such as Kafka split each topic into partitions that are written and read in parallel.

The pattern reaches further. GPUs can be divided into isolated slices, and in distributed systems a network partition is the failure every design has to survive. Divide the whole, isolate the parts, scale each one independently: the word describes the mechanism itself.
